Increase brain power and improve your memory and concentration with our Super Brain Power Breakfast Smoothie

Drink this smoothie in the morning  and enhance your brain’s performance in the afternoon.  This nutrient powerhouse of a smoothie has been proven to optimize your ability to think clearly and quickly all day.

Keen to help my eldest daughter maximise her potential and minimize stress in her final year of the International Baccalaureate, I spent time researching foods that would help her brain work at its best and make her feel clear, focused and happy.

My idea was to design a smoothie that could be easily made the night before and gulped down by my teen before a day at school. I wanted to include naturally occurring foods that were the most nutrient-dense available, foods that had been proven to help brain agility.

I chose not to include vitamin, mineral or protein powder supplements. Evidence has since shown us that the health benefits found in ‘whole’ foods are far more effective than multivitamins, whose validity or even safety have been called into question, following a recent comprehensive scientific study led by a team of researchers at Nancy University in France.

Once the recipe was formulated I offered it to my daughter, she was put off by the brownish hue of the drink, but as soon as she sipped it, she realised that looks can be deceiving- it was delicious! After the first day I amazed at the almost immediate effects the Super Brainpower Breakfast Smoothie was having on my daughter’s ability to study. I realised we had stumbled on a smoothie recipe really worth sharing !

What’s in the Super Brainpower Breakfast Smoothie that makes it so effective, and why?

"Brainpower Smoothie"Blueberries have additional properties only recently discovered! According to new research from a British university, a blueberry smoothie was found to increase powers of concentration by 20% in their control group in one single day. Blueberries along with spinach have been shown to restructure parts of the brain helping to prevent memory loss. “They have the potential in the long term to lead to cognitive improvement” said the lead researcher in the study. "brainpower smoothies"Blueberries and spinach are super-high in antioxidants which in turn bind with free radicals,  it ‘s the free radicals that are responsible for breaking down brain cells as we age , but these antioxidants render them harmless.

"brainpower smoothie"Spinach is rich in everything you need to stay healthy, including iron, potassium, beta-carotene, vitamin C and calcium.

"brainpower smoothie"Bananas are a fruit high in antioxidants, dopamine and seratonin. Dopamine boosts attention and memory and serotonin lifts mood and curbs appetite.

"brainpower smoothie"Apples, including their juice prevent the loss of an important neurotransmitter called acetylcholine which is essenatial for brain agility.

"brainpower smoothie"Pumpkin seeds give you your zinc requirements and this mineral is important for cognitive function and enhancing brainpower.

"brainpower smoothie"Flax seeds are high in DHA, an omega 3 fatty acid crucial to optimum health of your nervous system and brain. Low levels of DHA have been linked to a higher risk of developing memory loss in later life.

"brainpower smoothie"Almonds are very high in protein, fibre and omega 3’s as well as vitamin e, which helps prevent poor memeory according to a study published in the Amerciacn Journal of Epidemiology.

"brainpower smoothie"Wheatgerm is high in particularly high in folate and vitamin B6 which is full of thiamine.  Thiamine heplsp with memeory while folate works to increase bloodflow to the brain which in turn enhances brain functionality. This super germ also includes generous amounts of vitamin E known to prevent poor memory.

"brainpower smoothie"Fibre is important too, this slows down the absorption of sugars in to the bloodstream. All our smoothie ingredients share this property of gradual delivery, so helping to keep your brain alert all day without suffering any sugar dips.

" brainpower smoothie"

  • 3 apples
  • 1 large banana
  • 60g / 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 large handful of baby spinach leaves
  • 4 heaped tbsp’s of ground almonds

  • 1 heaped tbsp of wheatgerm
  • 1 heaped tbsp of flax seeds ( linseeds)
  • 300ml/ 10fl oz of apple juice

What to do

"Brainpower Smoothie"Place the apple juice into the blender, then add the spinach and cut apple pieces and pulse-blend. Then add the blueberries, almonds, pumpkin and flax seeds, followed by the wheatgerm. Pulse-blend again until the pumpkin seeds are well pulverised. Finally add the banana and blend to a creamy consistency. Add more apple juice if your child prefers a more liquid consistency. Use organic  fresh fruit where possible. Your smoothie will take on a light brownish hue, this is caused by the spinach and blueberries battling it out in the colour stakes, and neither wins in this one I’m afraid. This smoothie does not get top marks for its looks, but the taste is a wonderful surprise!

I can vouch for this smoothie as my mother gives it to me every morning, and now when I spend hours studying I find I can concentrate for so much longer! It really works:-) I highly recommend drinking the Brainpower Smoothie for all you teens out there like me, struggling with awesome workloads.

This sounds yummy! Thanks for the recipe. I will have to go out a buy a few things before making it, but I have most of it already here! :)

  3. Interesting. At my age, I need all the brain boosting foods I can get! lol How does it taste? Do you ever throw some cocoa powder or vanilla yogurt or honey in it?

There’s a lot to be said for eating right and behavior. Whenever my youngest acts up in school and gets into trouble, it’s usually because she didn’t eat her lunch. I’m sure it has to do with low blood sugar. I need to try this her. She loves fruits and veggies.

I host a foodie meme called Friday Food fight. I would love for you to link up and share your smoothie recipe. Hope to see you in the ring!

This is very similar to my morning protein shake. I use
      3tbsp vanilla yogurt
      3tbsp frozen blueberries
      10 frozen strawberries
      2oz. grounded almonds
      1tsp honey
      1sml honey crisp apple
      1 banana
      1c O.J (some pulp)
      a pinch of cinnamon
      a scoop of muscle milk.(Choc.)
For a treat sometimes I add semi sweet choc. chips.
It is the best smoothie ever! Coming in at around 720 B listed healthy calories.
Add all ingredients to a blender and Frappe. Might have to add about 5 ice cubes. I use some frozen fruits because I can’t go to the market enough to get complete fresh fruits. Plus using frozen fruits cuts back on watering it down with ice.
Also I take my vitamins before I drink this. One of my favorite can’t live with out is Mega Red. Hope this helps.

  4. Looks delicious! I am so trying this! I have all the ingredients except the wheat germ! YUm!

  6. I LOVE making these healthy smoothies for the kiddos. Its a sure way that they will get some of those good nutrients that they might not other wise eat. Thanks for sharing your recipe. I’ll have to give it a try!

I have just made this shake and yes, while it looks bit gross, the taste is quite palatable. I used pears and pear juice as my son is being tested for ADD, so I am trying to stay away from salicylates which are in apples. I realise they are in blueberries aswell, but I thought that the other benefits of the berries far outway the effects of the salicylates. I also added Soy Lecithin and ground Black Chia Seeds for that extra superfood hit. I added a tblspn of honey aswell just to sweeten it up for the kids. I am yet to try it on them, but I am hoping it will become a week morning staple in our home. I will let you know how it goes. Thank you so much for this recipe.

  8. Amy on

Weve been including green smoothies in our diet for around 2 months now and definitely have noticed a difference not only in our health but also our well-being. I am impressed. Kids love it too and I was making smoothies for me not them.
I showed hubby this recipe last night and he said that must be why I can concentrate at work better so there you go. When I get some extra ingredients all add them to the smoothie and make this one. Now I’m getting up to make our breakfast green smoothie :)

  9. Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe. I love the combination of different foods. It’s amazingly healthy.
