Irish Soda Bread Recipe
Discover the true taste of Ireland with this soda bread recipe. Irish soda bread is super easy, so don’t be put off if you haven’t made bread before- in fact this Irish soda bread recipe is the perfect starter bread for anyone feeling a bit nervous about bread making. It’s very quick to make, and takes no longer than 45 minutes from start to finish. Let’s begin..
Irish Soda Bread Recipe
What you need
- 250g/ 8 oz of plain white flour
- 250g/ 8 oz of wholemeal flour
- 100g/4 oz of oats
- 1 tsp of bicarb of soda
- 1 tsp of salt
- 25 g/1 oz of butter in cubes
- 500ml/16 fluid oz of buttermilk or yogourt
- large mixing bowl
- baking tray
- wire rack
What to do
Preheat your oven to 200C/ gas mark 6/ 400F Then take your baking sheet and quickly dust with a light sprinkling of flour. Place all the dry ingredients and mix well together with clean hands, then add the butter and buttermilk. Lightly put the dough together, don’t overdo it whatever you do and gently shape it into a nice round loaf shape. Place it carefully onto your floured tray, then take a knife and score a cross into the top, don’t be afraid to cut deep. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes. It’s ready when you tap the underside and it sounds hollow. Transfer onto a wire rack and allow to cool.
Serve broken into quarters or eighths while warm with a piping hot bowl of Irish stew or the vegetarian equivalent. Our family favourite is to enjoy warm soda bread with salted butter and Seville orange marmalade for breakfast.
